Two time-served rock bands. Both put on great live shows and have put out no shortage of riffy delights. I recall this one going down well back in the day.
I'll go Clutch by a hair, although I reckon early Monster Magnet nudges out early Clutch by a hair too.
What say you folk?
Re: Thunderdome: Monster Magnet vs Clutch.
2I unapologetically love Monster Magnet. Big riffs, stupid lyrics I would not sing in public, great recordings. Clutch, I like the music, never liked the vocals. I like Wyndorf's timber and style way better.

3From the Clutch I've heard, which was Elephant Riders and bits and pieces of the other stuff, I don't think I'll ever feel like investigating further. I'm not sold on the more creative parts of what they do, and I'm always bothered by the drumming for some reason.
By Monster Magnet I enjoy the first few albums. I never made it past Dopes to Infinity, which was a little too slick for me, but the other two are a lot of fun. I get that they trigger the bullshit alarm too hard for some, but I'll take them, no second thoughts. This is a good place to ask if I should bother with their later output at all.

4I'm a big fan of Monolithic Baby! as well, but nothing beyond that one. While it's a bit long (14 tracks), and front-loaded, 8-10 of the originals are pretty good, and the two covers solid, particularly "The Right Stuff" by Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters. I'd dare say it's better than the original, more energy. The other cover is "Venus in Furs" by VU. Many tracks would fit appropriately in the thread about "Old Lyrics Now Deemed Inappropriate" though they were never appropriate. They've always been what my wife calls "boy music."Bernardo wrote: Thu Jun 10, 2021 1:34 pm

I like Dopes a lot as well.
Edit: Not much a fan Powertrip or God Says No, but maybe I need to revisit.

Re: Thunderdome: Monster Magnet vs Clutch.
5Clutch are the better band (what a drummer!) but I can't say I've really cracked their music. Have tried many albums many times...
I just like Monster Magnet more - that run of records through till Dopes is a blast, esp the 25-Tab EP. Found too much cheese, polish and the dreaded 90's irony posture in Powertrip for me to really get down and go any further in their discog.

6I always avoided Clutch because every Clutch fan I know is an agro meathead or a methy scumbag.
I remember Monster magnet using flangers, so that's pretty cool I think.
MM. No Waffles (Edit below)
Edit (see above) because I just did a quicky dive to refresh brain grapes to what these bands sound like and I don't want to vote for either of them.

7Monster Magnet on the strength of SoG and Tab. I find most Clutch profoundly boring.
We're headed for social anarchy when people start pissing on bookstores.
Re: Thunderdome: Monster Magnet vs Clutch.
8Clutch looks good on paper, but ends up being boring or annoying every time. The vocals are also really hard to take. Monster Magnet had some riffs.
I guess Neil Fallon at least disavowed Alex Jones after appearing on his show.

9Spine of God is one of my faves ever, so my vote for them. The rest of their stuff... meh.
I really dig those first two Clutch albums, though.

10Never saw Monster Magnet, but I've seen Clutch live three times and they never disappointed, although their albums can be hit or miss. I met them once after a show and they were real nice down to earth guys. The Monster Magnet dude always seemed kind of "HEY! I'M THAT DUDE!" into himself or something.
By the way, I'm not an aggro meathead or a methy scumbag. Some people actually think I'm alright.
