Magazine is one of the most disappointing bands ever, so rarely living up to its potential. McGeoch was better in the Banshees, Devoto better as a snarly punk singer than post punk Peter Gabriel or whatever. The few songs that sound like leftover Buzzcocks songs are fine but otherwise Crap.

Nailed it!
Magazine is so loved though by so many critics, cited by so many musicians. I really don't get it. Perhaps no band ever looked better "on paper" and was so disappointing in reality. Every band member is good at what they do yet were better in other projects. Devoto's lyrics were the best thing about Magazine.

Yes, but Barry is fucking awesome. Was fucking awesome in the Bad Seeds as well. I love me some Barry Adamson.

The two singers' voices remind me of each other on earlier records. Wire's influence on Minor Threat, Magazine's influence on Embrace, etc.
But yeah, Wire.

Makes sense, as Colin Newman lists Buzzcocks'
Spiral Scratch (with Devoto on vocals) as one of his favorite records.

It's been Wire for both this and the GoF thread, but I'd probably sooner reach for GoF or possibly even Magazine these days if only because the Wire/Colin Newman discography is very much etched in my bones at this point.
