The c64 disk drive is nuts. It's the worst design ever.

There's basically a whole other independent computer in there acting as a disk drive controller, for some reason. This made them extremely expensive to produce back in the day, and a proper PITA to deal with today. And yet for all that it's also the most unbelievably slow disk drive, probably the slowest ever built, taking minutes to load files that should take seconds. There must be a great story about how it came to be.

The fact that you can make such sophisticated demos run on it shows how much wasted power it had.

I'm guessing the concept of virtual devices wasn't around back then? How then could it have been implemented differently?
