You have to choose one of these wonderful Albini recorded albums. All of them released in a period of one year (93-94) aprox.
Some of my fave ever. Yours also.
Right now I'd go with Shorty. Though it used to be FOC.
Thumb days just sounds spectacular and the band goes on impredictable paths. The guitar playing rivals Denison's best. And that singer.
"Last one in my mouth is a jerk". Seriously, where does shit like that come from?
I must say though that my favorite bit among those albums is the very first minute of Blown (face down).
Re: Just another Thunderdome
2Don't know them all intimately enough, but of those I do it's FOC.
at war with bellends
Re: Just another Thunderdome
3Gonna rep for Johnboy. I haven’t heard Claim Dedications in ages, but I wore that record out, once upon a time.
Re: Just another Thunderdome
4Yeah I haven't heard them all either so can't really vote. Zeni Geva recorded an album or two in that period that fit this niche too..
Shorty rules.
Shorty rules.
Re: Just another Thunderdome
5I'm familiar with Zeni Geva's "Freedom Bondage" only and, though I like it, I don't think is on par with these other records.
I was tempted to add Crain's "Speed", though.
But those four... so mindblowing.
I could choose any of them depending on the day. The first I discovered was Johnboy's and I vividly remember thinking: "now THIS is the sound I've been searching for years".

6I didn't see Teeth as a poll option.
IMO, that is Steve's best work.
Or anything he recorded by The Ex. Especially "Turn."

Re: Just another Thunderdome
7These are all woefully underlistened by me. Dug up YT playlists for each, holy fuck. Shit. Goddamn.
Re: Just another Thunderdome
8Just wanted to know people's thoughts on these specific albums that somehow share (at least on my mind) "similarities". Or let's say they inhabit a weird place full of gutsy Rawk.yngwie einstein wrote: Mon Jul 19, 2021 3:57 pm I didn't see Teeth as a poll option.

For the definitive Albini Xperience... Seamonsters maybe?
Or Tar's Jackson.
Re: Just another Thunderdome
9I second Seamonsters. Dave Gedge's slide guitar lead on "Dare" is one of my favorite sounds ever.Vibracobra wrote: Tue Jul 20, 2021 2:37 pmJust wanted to know people's thoughts on these specific albums that somehow share (at least on my mind) "similarities". Haven't listened to Jackson in a while. I've got Tar's live at Lounge Ax releases they put on Bandcamp last year, and they are on my phone, so I hear them frequently on my commute.
Re: Just another Thunderdome
10Woulda said Lost Nation Road was the classic Craw album of choice, no? Albini recorded that one too, right?
Relistened to Johnboy for the first time in yonks and listened to Big'n for the first time ever and the answer is Dazzling Killmen.
My rank:
Face of Collapse
Thumb Days
(Lost Nation Road)
Claim Dedications
Cutthroat
Craw
Speed (never got into this at all)
Tar's Jackson is operating above all this stuff, IMO. Sonically one of Steve's best too.
