At the risk of going into blueshammer territory, I have to say a well played harp can be pretty damn cool. Eviscerate away.

One one hand, you have Blues Traveler.
What Popper does is pure wankery. A skilled harp player knows when to hold back, when to add texture, when to answer a lick, and when to take a lead without sounding like they’re trying to fill 12 bars with as many notes as possible.

One of the best shows I ever saw was Daniel Higgs solo with an amplified acoustic and a harmonica. Holy fuck I was floored. In the right hands (and mouth), not crap.

Sometimes it’s the perfect instrument for the material:

This one’s for you, FM JFV:

Ennio Morricone wrote some great harmonica parts.

I don’t have much use for the usual pentatonic noodling.

Not Crap. Waffles for misuse. Bonus points for my little niece flipping out on her toy one.

The other day I read an article about the National Museum of African American Music, which led me to this great performance by Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton. Harmonica band jam starts around 2:34. "Hound Dog" at the start - shouldn't be missed.

Beck has a song called 'One Foot in the Grave' that he used to perform live. Inspired by Sonny Terry, it's just him with harmonica, stomping his feet, and some LOL lyrics ("While sitting at home cooking up a steak/Satan came down dressed like a snake"). Worth looking up.

Not crap overall.

I will die on this hill: One Foot In The Grave is probably Beck's best album.

I didn't really like that album when I first got it - I was more into Odelay-type Beck - but I've changed my mind. Lots of good stuff on there.
