C/NC: Candyman (2021)

I was more than a little disappointed with the horror aspects of this reimagining; artless, with practically every kill happening offscreen. I'm much more interested in atmosphere/suspense than gore/killing anyway, but there was nothing chilling about it. What worked was examining generational racial trauma, I just wish that Nia DaCosta successfully tied that racial trauma to a supernatural entity that was effective and haunting.

I liked it; I didn't love it.

NC but with a mess of waffles.

I liked it, didn't love it.

I felt like it had soooo many ideas crammed in 90 mins (normally I LOVE a 90 min movie), but this felt like it needed 20 more min to let all those ideas breathe better. I also felt like there was a lot of stuff cut in the last 1/3rd of the movie, the editing and storytelling got really choppy. I didn't like the bee sting sorta body horror element.

I wish some of the subtext stayed subtext and didnt become text, the movie sometimes felt like a thesis instead of an organic feeling movie. It suffered from trying to be important and the weight of that, instead of trying to be *just* a horror movie.

Very artful though, loved the production design and sound/score.
