GEAR HUNT

Got a thing you're looking for? Post it here.

I am on the hunt for a guitar tech work box. I have some work in the coming year on a tour that you will all be sick of hearing about, soon enough.

I will be drum and guitar tech and I will need a work box. I'm not really up for spending $500 for a new one, but if you have one (or have some thoughts about how you'd put one together), I'm interested in talking. Drum tech I can do with my eyes closed, but guitar tech will be a new experience.

To be clear, the guitars will be in their own cases, so I don't need a big rolling coffin, I just need something like this thing:

But probably not that over-engineered.

I seem to remember Chris Jury building one of these before. Perhaps he can share.

Yes. He'd likely have good advice about what design features pay off and which don't. Maybe send a PM.

Ultracase makes one similar to the Three circle design case but a little cheaper at $440. There is a bare bones one on Reverb for $300+shipping.

Those cases are really small though, too small in my opinion. You'll more than likely need another peli case for strings, gaff and cleaners.

Swan used to make one that was slightly larger that I purchased 4yrs ago for £175. It's not marine ply so maybe not as robust but it's a lot lighter and I've taken it around the world so sturdy enough I think. It's deep enough for Gaff, Orange Micro amp, cleaners, tools and plenty of strings. The leopard print was a home job.

I've seen them on occasion on eBay so maybe setup a search for 'guitar tech case'.

Could even build the pop-up neck support tower into a guitar hard case... like a fur-covered flap... possibly concealing some storage for a few sets of strings... now there's a thought...
This is actually a great idea. Find a case that isn't super form fitting so any guitar can fit in, and then modify it to make the lid removable. Place on top of a sturdy keyboard stand and you have a makeshift table at a nice height. Since it's not carrying a guitar, you can also remove all of the foam out of the lid (if there is any) and bolt storage solutions onto into for organizing all of your parts/tools.

I'd be inclined to leave the lid in place and just add some lightweight lid-support hinges. That way it doesnt come flopping down on you. Remove foam from the top and you can mount all kinds of stuff to the lid that turns into a back wall when you're using the thing. Mounting a tuner to the lid seems like a no-brainer.

I'm after all kinds of odd little things. I'll post as I think of them, but first thing that comes to mind:

4 or 5 years ago I got one of these for $30, in the box with manual, warranty card, receipts etc...
Doesn't sound quite like a Dyna-Mite, or the old Gain Brain, but its fast and sounds damn good.

Would very much like to make a pair.

Bartell XK-12.

Apparently there was also a hollow-body or semi-hollow version, which also looks to be rad.

I’ve been conducting weekly internet searches for maybe a year now, and so far have seen only one in the wild. (And it’s black—maybe the only color that could possibly not interest me—and pricy. If it were only one, I could probably overlook the other.)

At any rate, it’s the white whale I will continue to chase. (Unless, y’know, someone happens to have one lying around, or something….)

Anyone out here have a beat-up Les Paul Studio they might be willing to part with? Pickup swaps/refins/headstock repairs all fair game, just trying to find something for a project!
