I've heard visceral hatred from film fans at the mention of Anderson's name. It's very easy to see what is in his stylized and sometimes precious approach that irritates people. Still I've usually enjoyed his films and felt myself something of an Anderson apologist, without being very good at explaining why.
I found this youtube, critical film essay deal, did it well:

2Rushmore is kinda funny.
But the Rest is so meh. I just don't get it.

3I've never seen a Wes Anderson film, but feel safe in calling the lot a cinematic equivalent of Tune-Yards.

5Yup, NC. He is clear on what he likes, both in subject matter and form, and has been doing it long enough to demonstrate he’s doing it in good faith. His films are cake, and on occasion I like cake. Saw “The French Dispatch” on Saturday and enjoyed it, including while groaning at his cherry-picked clichés (the bestial painter, the manifesto-obsessed French students, the perfectionist Japanese chef). Perhaps there’s nothing other than sponge under the marzipan, but it doesn’t stop it from being a good cake.Adam_I_III wrote:Really enjoyable films. Fun, clever, playful.

6I'd say NC up thru The Royal Tenenbaums and even that's being a little generous. By The Darjeeling Limited I knew I never needed to see one of his movies again.

8Great filmmaker whos films kinda turned into the pinnacle of aughts trope.
I've enjoyed their films and never thought "what a piece of shit" after seeing one.
Gonna say NC, but major waffles:
PEDANTIC AS FUCK
TOO MUCH SYMMETRY
CUTE BULLSHIT

10Up through Royal is great, the dog claymation one was cute.
Someone on the archived PRF said that WA whould be forced to direct a film he or Noah Buambach did not write, or like a horror film. I agree with that. I'm sure that his films all feel different for him to make, but they all feel the same to watch at this point.
