Artistic Choice: Mid-song Fade Out/In

You know, where the song fades to silence, but then fades back in, usually as part of an extended jam and maybe with something slightly different going on.

Example here at 3:55

I'm also interested in hearing other examples, so post 'em here.

Regardless of whether the song is good, is the mid-song fade out/in a good idea?

My vote is crap. Whoever did it first was cute but it's just kind of a cheeky way for the band and or producer to think they've pulled a fast one on the audience.

There are far greater artistic follies one could make but the mid song fade is unnecessary.

NC when you need to mix/edit your way out of a shit performance on a recording. "Yeah man, we'll fade out before that major fuckup, and bring it back in after with a beat drop." Guilty! It is Crap!

Not Crap when you're Can, but it's hard to imagine this in a modern context that wouldn't sound like a wink-y gimmick.

I like the false ending in Helter Skelter. Not Crap.

This was always my take on why they exist. "Well, we really fucked up this take and can't really go back and fix it. I've got an idea..."

I cannot think of an example where I like it, so... CRAP.

I say not crap.
I think it can be done in a way that is tasteful or interesting, like most any other device of production/composition.

Also, Roxy Music are sweet.

the pause/rest/moment of silence at 3:42 was the first thing that came to mind
not exactly what you mean, but an opportunity to listen to and share this song, is one that shouldn't be passed up.
