Thread for Contemporary Jazz/Avant Garde/'Free' Music Recommendations

Will have limited appeal in the land of aluminum beardo rock, but it's here if you're interested.
.................

I mentioned this record in the Shabaka Hutchings (recommended!) thread, the new one by Alabaster DePlume. Influences like Ethiopiques sax, Sun Ra, 'spiritual' music, dub, and mumbled poetry. It's better than that sounds!

^I shall check out more than the promising first twenty seconds of that when I can.

Not free, but definitely contemporary are The Melt Trio, who are from Berlin. I’m friends with two of them, so am pleased I enjoy their music quite a lot. They’re a little Radiohead-inflected, which wouldn’t usually be to my taste, but their songs at their best seem like carefully put-together constructions, often blissful, sometimes spooky, usually very understated, and feel like an authentic representation of the three intellects and personalities behind them.

Great threat idea, thanks.

That actually sounds really great. Look forward to checking it out. Thanks for the recommendation.

I picked up Makaya McCraven’s Universal Beings several months ago after learning about it on the PRF, and it’s been on constant rotation ever since. It’s not music I’d naturally gravitate toward: there’s a considerable hip-hop and acid jazz element to it. But I love it nonetheless. In a way, it harkens back to when jazz was party music.

A friend and I run a tiny label called Telegraph Harp that I think would fit in here.

Our most recent release is duo of Robbie Lee and Lea Bertucci that I really enjoy.

My wife got us tickets to see Kamasi Washington. I seriously hope he has some of the players from The Epic that night.

Came across this awhile back and thought it might be interesting to some folk in the PRF:

Whoa I had no idea.. Salut!

A friend who I talked to over the weekend about this stuff kept coming back to the Chicago label International Anthem. There's probably tons of great stuff on here (outside of the things mentioned already), including some familiar Chicago faces like Jeff Parker, Damon Locks, etc.

Good stuff, keep it coming!

I found out about and follow this German drummer Christian Lillinger on IG. I haven't made up my mind if it's something that I can connect with musically, but it's pretty damn unique:
