We all love Max-era Sepultura (well, OK, some of y'all dislike Roots, but that's another thread). This, I hope, is not a point of great controversy.
For many years I had only heard Against, Nation and first 2 Soulfly records. None of these things were for me - too much nu-metal production cliches, coupled w/ unmemorable songs. I was content to hear no more.
But I've recently gone a bit further along in both bands discographies and found that there is some good to great material there - (Dark Ages and Dante XXI are particularly strong) - good enough to go back and re-listen to the aforementioned 4 albums. They aren't great, but there's shadows of good ideas lurking in there - they clearly suffered from the expectations of the marketplace at the time of recording.
You can def hear that Max's vision (elemental, almost reductive rage tunes) was not going to work w/ Sepultura - who were clearly bored w/ that primitivism and wanted to stretch their wings into more mainstream rock. Neither side quite got it right, IMO.
Which tribe gets your support?
Re: Thunderdome: Post-Max Sepultura vs Soulfly
2Don't think I've properly listened to a Sepultura album since Against (which was OK), and only ever heard the first Soulfly album (which...wasn't).
I'm told it's much like you have it; they've both shifted into different areas, and do their things competently, I just don't think either of those things chime with my listening habits now, though I'd be likelier to listen to recent Sepultura I reckon.
What was the other Max sideband of recent times? Killer be Killed I think? It was an awful name but I did mean to give it a listen. I'll maybe do that at the weekend.

3Oh, avoid avoid avoid. Totally middle of the road modern mersh metal w/ insipid, cheesy radio friendly choruses. Easily the worst thing Max has been involved in by quite some margin - yes, worse than the Fred Durst track on the Soulfly debut.A_Man_Who_Tries wrote: Tue Jul 12, 2022 5:51 am What was the other Max sideband of recent times? 5For real. Andreas, who originally made the band awesome, hasn't mustered much better than Soulfly.
