I am considering going solid state. I haven't found a good preamp yet, but will need a power section. The ART SL-A is one that has been recommended. Anyone have experience with anything else?

I have the Carvin DCM 150 and it's good for powering 2 individual 1x12s or bridged for something bigger in mono, but it was a little underpowered for my 2 2x12s.

Any reason it needs to be rackmount? There's numerous "amp in a pedal" things out there now.

I forgot about those. I have a rack so figured it would be the easiest setup, but pedal would be fine.

I have one of those. 100 watt per ch. Doesn't seem like 100 watts but if you bridge it it is ok loud wise. I've use it at home a s the back end of a rusty box and it worked at pretty respectable volume, but my 60 watt Peavey Tube poweramp seems louder, and the 120 watt version of the same blows it away, but those are 3 space racks. for a single space the ART is ok. The little Orange portable power amp looks good, but it's kinda spendy for what it is. I am also interested in just getting one of those tiny TC Electronic, Trace eliot or other baby bass amps since they are sub $200, and from what I hear, pretty loud.

I have an old Rivera tube head that I had hoped to use. Unfortunately, a borrowed preamp sounded like shit into the effects return.

The new version has a lot more power, though like the old one it's pretty deep so it won't fit in shallow rack cases.

This isn't quite a pedal but it will fit on a large pedalboard, and is probably the hottest option out there in its size range:

I saw the Duncan units in a search. Pricey but may be what I'm looking for.

How much power do you need?
What cabinet are you driving?

I was thinking 100w should suffice. It's an 8-ohm Marshall 2x12.
