New topic time!
Okay as a person who only speaks two languages, music and movies, I would like to know what of the latter you fine gents are "into".
I've searched and haven't found a topic like this.
Talk about foreign, comedy, horror, independant, directors, actors, whatever.
I'll start by throwing in my two cents.
Some of my favorite directors and their bigger movies:
Roman Polanski (Rosemary's Baby, The Pianist, Chinatown)
Wes Anderson (Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, Bottle Rocket)
David Lynch (Mulholland Dr., Lost Highway, the Twin Peaks series, Eraserhead, The Elephant Man)
Akira Kurosawa (Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Rashamon)
Luis Buñuel (The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie)
Ingmar Bergman (The Seventh Seal)
David Cronenberg (eXistenz, Naked Lunch, The Fly, Spider - has anyone seen this?)
Well thats a start, most of the true music ethusiasts I know are also movie fans, so the hope is... we can talk about some movies.

4Darktowel, its good to know someone else liked Punch-Drunk Love. Theres few directors that could turn around after making something like Magnolia and make a romantic comedy (as bizzare and twisted as that is). Who knew Sandler could actually act?
The colors in that movie are spectaculer, its no Suspiria but the grocery store scene, just great.
Its funny how Cronenberg and Lynch get thrown into the same catagory so many times, the only thing they have in common is that their movies are often insain. I suppose "surreal" is the correct way to describe them.
Deffinatly watch Naked Lunch, if you have not already seen it.
Also Scanners, Shivers, and the Dead Zone (Stephen King).
Has anyone seen any Todd Solonz movies? They're very very bizzare. The best was probably Happiness, then Welcome to The Dollhouse and Storytelling. I would reccomend any of those for a trip into the surreal.
Then of course theres Gummo...

I've actually seen all cronenbergs, including his first few (stereo and crimes of the future).
I really recomend you try and find these; they're real gems!

am also surprised that a lot of people mention him and lynch together.
I found Mulholan Drive rather annoying actually!

cheers,

6I like Lynch quite a bit, he's put out some real cult classics like Lost Highway and the tv series Twin Peaks. Mulholland Dr. was probably is worse "populer" movie. I did however like his short films, The Alphabet and The Cowboy And The Frenchmen were very interesting (not to mention completely opposite).
I assume you're talking about Nicolas Roeg, I havent seen any of his films yet, but I've kept my eye out for Dont Look Now, just havent found it yet. There movie rental places in my town are terrible. Blockbuster has pretty much monopolized everything.
Have you seen Eraserhead? (David Lynch)

Absolutely, The Big Labowski is one of my all-time favorite movies, and Fargo is one of the few just perfect movies. It never turns cheesy, simply amazing. The Man Who Wasnt There is also great, Billy Bob Thorton is the man.
Have you seen Naked Man? It was co-written by Ethan Coen, not a particulerly great movie, but really shows the Coen's twisted humor. It stars Michael Rapaport, very underrated actor.
Anyone seen The Crying Game? Very excelent/bizzare movie.

9Well for starters my pseudonym, Fellbrick, is a combination of Fellini and Kubrick. I would also list Terry Gilliam, Truffaut, Jean-Pierre Junet, The Quay Brothers and Bergman, as my primary directorial loves. I would give honorable mentions to Darren Aranofsky, P.T. Anderson, Chris Nolan and Wes Anderson.
As far as specific movies I love:
Fellini's 8 1/2
2001 A space Odyssey
Institute Benjementa
Brazil
Chinatown
Seven Samurai
Seventh Seal
Metropolis
Man with the Movie Camera
The Manchurian Candidate
Delicatessen
Dawn of the Dead (strangely enough)
I don't really care for what I've seen of David Lynch. I've seen Blue Velvet a few times and have never really gotten into it. I couldn't even make it through Dune. I would however like to see Eraserhead.

10How could I forget 8 and 1/2!!
The criterion for that is amazing, they actually had it at hastings. Amazing, amazing movie. And Kubrick is waaaay up on my list, he's just so obvious i usually dont talk about him. He's a true artist though, I have total respect for that man. I like your choice of modern directors, Memento blew me away the first time I watched it, The Following was also very good for what it was, one could compare it to Pi in many ways.
My favorite modern directors are deffinatly Wes Anderson, Todd Solondz, PT Anderson, Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requim For a Dream) and Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko). The other's movies have already been mentioned in one way or another.
I still havent found Metropolis!! Gah!
Also, have you seen those botched remakes of 8 and 1/2, shame shame.
