I shared Steve's tenuous connection to underground queer filmmaking a couple of days ago; apologies for not sharing it earlier.
Over the years at length I've told stories about how I got into Big Black, watching Shellac for their first show at Augenblick, and friendships and bands forged via Steve's recording studio's online forum Electrical Audio/PRF. Good stories all, and it's not completely outside the realm of reason to note that my life would be wildly different if not for those friendships, connections, and such. What I'd like to briefly discuss is a song recorded by Steve.
"Closet Case" is a song by Pedro, Muriel, and Esther - side project from unapologetically black, genderqueer, intersex, performance artist Vaginal Davis. It's on the CD The White to be Angry, and was recorded by Steve in the mid-90's. The song was used in Hustler White, an unapologetically queer ludic and lurid explicit sex comedy from Canadian filmmaker l'enfant terrible Bruce LaBruce. What I hope I'm getting through to you is that Steve recorded a song used in a movie that gleefully depicts scene after scene of hardcore, gay and depraved sex acts. #ThankYouSteveAlbini and don't forget to screen Hustler White with your grandparents.
