Although I prefer Gore for "tennis shoes in a dryer" kinda metal, Gorguts was on to something here.

I used to like it a lot, but I'm on the fence now. Not crap, though. Changing up their sound was smart because they were kinda bland early on.

Yes, first album sounds very derivative of Death to me while second makes it clear they had been listening closely to Suffocation; not saying they were BAD but considering the competition and amount of bands in the genre quickly signed to the big metal indies back then, it's easy to understand why they were one of the bands dropped by Roadrunner when they realized they had signed too many death metal bands who lacked built in fanbases/rep off their demos and the distinctive styles that the earlier death metal bands getting signed had.

Anyway, not crap. Really creative and unique album but also not something I go for when I'm in the mood for death; irarely something I feel like playing but when I *do* feel like playing it like every third-fifth year or so, it sounds damn good...

Well, they had Cryptopsy, Kataklysm, etc. for local competition. Cryptopsy were going to win at frenetic brutality (until they started to suck).
