Re: Band: Babe the Blue Ox

Toured with them back in the '90s and found them to be a great band to hang out with and to watch every night.

I remain a huge fan.

If you're into Babe The Blue Ox, I might also humbly suggest the album "Unbuilding" by the Pauses. Another great band in an oddly similar vein.

They were and probably still are super nice, and we always enjoyed seeing them/playing with them on tour.

Rambling old-man story:

Silkworm ditched a house show in NJ once to take advantage of an offer to crash at their place in Brooklyn for a night.
Babe the Blue Ox was on tour, i think, and I guess we got the key from a neighbor or something. Very kind of them.

We actually drove down to the house show, and it seemed lame. Got there and there was a small handful of kids milling around.
The kids said we could start after The Simpsons was over. Hmmm.
We had this place in Brooklyn, thanks to BTBO, so...for the first and last time, we bailed on a show just because we didn't feel like doing it and it seemed like a loser.

Our tourmates Engine Kid did not bail.
They told us later that after The Simpsons was over, half of the northern NJ h.s./college age weirdo population showed up at the house, and the show was awesome.

The next day, at our NYC show, we saw a friend who worked in music publishing and a fan and woulda signed us to a publishing thing if things had gone differently.
He was like "hey what was up with that show at Jon Hiltz's house? I drove down there and you guys left?"
Turns out Jon was not only the drummer in Born Against, but he was (and remains) legendary for putting on great house shows at that house.

One of my all time favorite bands. Saw them once in Houston and once in Tucson. There were maybe a dozen people at the Houston show, on the patio of the Axiom. At one point, Tim handed me his guitar in the middle of a song. I tried to keep up, but it was in a weird tuning. Hannah said “Wow, very good!” after the song, but I felt pretty dumb. They started rocking again and I quickly forgot about it.

I love Rose’s bass playing. She attacks it, but skillfully. Always a look of joy about her when she plays.

So very not crap.

I'm sure the feeling has faded over the years, but man, I bet that stung for a minute.
I have never listened to this band. I am listening to them right now because of this thread. Sounds good!
