dumb question: what s exactly an " internship" ?

I'm not exactly bilingual, and I get the overall idea of what an internship is, but I'd like it to be explained. Maybe it's something here it's called "becario", someone who make sort of "practices"or helps in a job without being paid (or poorly paid).
