Was just reading the self-interview section of the Lay It Down In Full View book about Silkworm, and it got me thinking...

There are songs that end up sounding almost exactly the same as the first time they were rehearsed. And then there are songs that float and fuck around for years and end up super different than their finished version. Or maybe they never end up in a finished version.

Even in my amateurish band, we have examples of both. There are songs that just sound done. And then there are... well this song is good but it sounds too much like this other song so we should change that part a little so it's unique or well fuck it maybe we should keep the lyrics and ditch the music or vice versa.

I don't know. Interested in hearing examples from others.

On the reissue for Sonic Youth's self titled LP you get both the album version of 'I dreamed I dream' along with a live version of the same song in an earlier form titled 'where the red fern grows'.

How you had those some of that recorded, and said, "Nah, We Can Do Better..." is beyond me. Not that what they evolved into is bad. Just that those early versions are barn burners.
