How to Have a Number One Single

Talk on another thread of the ridiculous "Crazy Frog" ringtone destined to be Number One in the UK next week coincided nicely with me reading the KLF's book The Manual. Although UK-centric (and somewhat, but not entirely, dated), it's an extremely cynical and entertaining read, with loads of good stuff on studios and engineers.
It's been out of print for years but a transcript is available here:

The KLF actually followed their own "golden rules" in 1988 as The Timelords and reached Number One with "Doctorin' the Tardis". I doubt, however, that this was a hit in the US as the tune was stolen from Gary Glitter and the lyrics were based on Dr Who.

Thanks for posting that - I saw a copy a couple of years ago and have since regretted not buying it.

"Doctorin' the Tardis" was in fact a minor hit here - some of us watched Doctor Who on Sunday mornings on public television (insufferable geeks like myself did, anyway) and that Gary Glitter song is a perennial sporting event anthem.

Say hi to Gorgeous George for us...
