Just got to say I saw an amazing show last night (Friday Nov 28 2003) at the Forum in London.
The Melvins played a live soundtrack to a screening three films by Cameron Jamie. 'Kranky Klaus' documented this bizarre Austrian good cop/bad cop ritual with St Nicholas and these horned furry monsters with bells on their asses who abuse naughty folk. 'Spook House' explored the creep clown world of Hallowe'en haunted house buildings in Detroit, and 'BB' was a black and white mock snuff-style recording of teenage backyard wrestling in the LA suburbs.
And The Melvins were the perfect accompaniment to this rampant visual mayhem. Loud, pounding and relentless. Rolling out monstrous, scary riffs, reflecting the sheer strangeness of what was being projected. Exotic, intoxicating and freakish.
Early on in the film 'BB' there were Middle-Eastern-sounding religious chants echoing in the mix, and I couldn't figure out whether it was Buzz Osborne's singing or if it was on the soundtrack. It sounded chilling, otherworldly, emphasising the ritualistic elements of the document, working beautifully with these slo-mo images of sub-Jackass backyard mania.
It was my first time seeing The Melvins play live and I was mightly impressed. Dale Crover's drumming was epic, and he sported a very nice black negligee too. I must say though, when it came towards the end of their set, I've never seen a band member leave the stage so suddenly and quickly. Buzz literally ran off-stage, guitar in hand, full-tilt straight through the audience (there was no raised stage). Maybe he remembered he needed to do something real quick in the dressing room that couldn't wait.
If you get the chance to see the show, do go along, it works brilliantly as a film/music dialogue, without being in the least bit pretentious. You can find out more about The Melvins / Cameron Jamie performances here: www.artangel.org.uk/
