I hear strange things about Walter Malling all the time. Like whispers down the telephone line of history.

-Walter Malling is a quarter past nine.
-Walter Malling won't take that kind of shit from anybody.
-Walter Malling once decided he could, and by jimminy, he DID.
-Walter Malling writes for the New Yorker AND the Bible.
-Walter Malling can induce dizziness.
-Walter Malling once wheelied the entire way to work.

i'd say he's a half-clever fake, because he's so clearly a troll. it's become more obvious as time goes on. the latest persona consists of trying to come across more real, more normal, more an average guy just like everybody else. the antagonist button-pushing statements are now thrown in as taglines at the end of otherwise normal posts. this is a departure from the initial style, which was basically werner_zackariah toned down enough that it was still annoying as fuck, but was not so harsh as to cause a major freakout and a call for him to be lynched. over time, he's blended in more and more, started acting a little more normal, but he hasn't lost sight of his true mission, which is to say absurd shit like "i love billy corgan" "i hate slint" "slint hoodie" "slint lightshow" etc etc. he still says that stupid shit, but now it's presented more sarcastically and less openly and bluntly.

so he (or she for that matter) has done a wonderful job of playing a made-up character that is likely pretty different from the actual human being's personality. i would guess the person who does it is a little bit socially awkward, with moments of totally sociopathic swings, highly intelligent, and bored enough to make up a bullshit personality for their own amusement. i think this person has a defense mechanism by which he/she doesn't care either way, if people like or dislike him. but i think over time, he's started to want people to like him more, but only for the reason that that will allow for the game to continue. if everybody just got annoyed as shit by him, it wouldn't be nearly as fun as it is if he can start to draw people in a little bit.

ultimately the person behing the WM persona is a little bit of a jerk, because the entire purpose of the personality is to rile people up and offend people and be all "anti". which isn't a bad thing, except when it's by itself with little to no redeeming stuff to counterbalance the bullshit.

so it's a half clever ruse. clever indeed. but only half clever because it's so obviously a ruse.

BTW, i like the whole "have sympathy for me! " angle that was introduced a little while ago. like "i'm kinda offended that you've said that" or other such statements coming from a rent-a-persona. coming from a guy who's stolen other people's avatars, incessantly hassled rachel, and still has the weak ass signature line about the slint hoodies. LOL! what a crock of shit!
