singer/songwriter: rufus wainwright

What a great voice. Hot damn.

However, it seems to me that the beauty of his voice often exceeds his song writing ability.

rufus wainwright is the old french guy resting on the side of the road by the bridge. all the trucks and troops are going by, over the bridge. I'm driving the fucking ambulance.

we talk. rufus wainwright is tired of walking. he doesn't want a ride into one of the next towns because he "doesn't know anyone there." he's too busy worrying about his animals, which (or is it who?) he left behind. pigeons, goat, cat. he wonders what will happen to the pigeons when the germans and the bombs come. of course, they'll fly away. the cat, as we both know, and which the old man seems to forget, will be fine. why? because it makes cats feel better.

what about the goat? the hell with the goat.

the sky is cloudy. all the people fleeing the city are streaming over the country roads. there's the bridge. the skies will soon clear. then there will be the luftwaffe, come for the bridge, and this old man wainwright's worrying will be over.

i've got the ambulance, and i've got to move. we've all got to move. this old man, he sits near the bridge, knowing as well as i do that the sky always clears sometime, busying his mind tuning over something that does not need to be turned over, neglecting these other things. and resting by the bloody bridge.

i've got the ambulance. he can ride with somebody, but he ain't riding with me.

I don't know if he'll ever exceed his powerhouse role in Tommy Tricker.

I just got the Want Two album, and I think it's very good indeed. Love the lyrics, and the songwriting, and the arrangements, and the voice.

I am very pleasantly surprised.
