I'm listening to Eureka right now and kind of like it. Can anyone reccomend something else by him I can try? Songwriting or "experimental" type stuff, it matters not to me.

All of his Drag City solo stuff is great. The more "experimental" stuff is kind of hit and miss. He did a record called "A New Kind of Water" with KK Null that is good, it's improv. electric guitar. 'Happy Days' is also cool. It's one 40 minute track, hurdy gurdy (sp?) and acoustic guitar. Kind of like droney folk something something stuff. I got the drone reference from it's similarities to some of Tony Conrad's violin work (see: Four Violins) in that it's more about the tones and how they relate to each other than about any specific melody err something...I'm not good at describing shit that's as off the cuff as some of his is, but I can recommend both of those records as enjoyable listens. I assume you know this, but all of the Gastr Del Sol stuff that he was involved in (and even the stuff he wasn't) is top notch.

I like the 'Halfway to a Threeway' EP a lot -- four songs, acoustic (but full arrangements). Great winter record.

Eureka's counterpiece is the stunning Insignificance, it may be better than Eureka, I'm not sure yet. It's more uptempo and rocky, but this is subjective.

the fingerstyle acoustic record, Bad Timing was my first intro to him. I like that one a ton.

I'd go for Insignificance first. mattw hepped me to its' existence recently and I thank him.

Oh yeah, and "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot". That's his finest work...

(that was a joke)

P.S. Avoid the Loose Fur record, too.

I second this -- definitely get Insignificance. It's beautiful.

All his stuff with David Grubbs as Gastr Del Sol is great. I'd recomend Crookt, Crakt, Or Fly highly. Also Upgrade And Afterlife.

Thanks for the recommendations. Just out of curiosity, which, if any, of the "experimental" releases are "ambient." Allmusic blurb mentioned he dabbled in it...

Thats fugged up about YHF, i think its a friggin amazing record... especially the mix. And i don't care about the hype, or how many dads took to it...

Anyway, I think Camoufleur is incredible, as is the earlier stuff by Gastr...

I have always been a big fan of Bad Timing as well, it's instrumental, just prior to his full pop submergence.

Loose fur, is ok, but it's not his best by any means...
I agree with his production techniques and engineering choices, and i remember when insignificance came out. For me, it was some bad pot, decent headphones, and ole J-Rourke and i was fit for a week. Just listening.

Despite the fact that it may not be hip, or in the now to say, HE is the best thing that ever happened to Wilco, save that Nels Cline fella...

Anyway, i was speaking to a guy i play with that knows him, and he was telling me that he had apparently spent some 10 grand or some amount of his own money on some orchestration for his (hopefully) next record.

Needless to say, i got some weed stashed in the freezer for that one as well, when or ever it gets here.

"Happy Days" is pretty fantastic...

for electronics, one might want to check out "I'm Happy & I'm singinging and a 1,2,3,4." It's pretty blissful ambient a la Fennesz with slight drone elements.

There's also Terminal Pharmacy, but I think you should check out the aforementioned titles before that.
