The Wright brothers are the fucking patron stepbrothers of the vast, barren Canadian underground.

I've always wondered what their following stateside has been like - ie, do the 'postrock' Don Cab/Shellac/Electrical Audio cognescenti approve?

They've been at it for 25 + years and they've made two of their best albums (One, Dance of the Headless Bourgeoisie) in the last five years. They are the most consistently kick-ass live band I know of, after Phish  . Jon wears old bermuda shorts onstage and looks like he has Down Syndrome. Rob looks like an old security guard (and wrote a great song about a security guard).

while they may not have had bunches of social skills,

These guys are fucking sweethearts. Don't know what this comment refers to. They're not tattooed and Rob might have a dog eared copy of Being and Time in the tour van (Nomobile), but a wittier band you'll seldom find, pace Shellac.

I prefered Andy Kerr's guitar playing of course, but Tom Hollistan makes up for chops with his perplexing onstage banter and 40 year-old nerdboy in a warhorse punkband sexual charisma.

Holy Not Crap Bruno!

oh yeah not crap...

They are one of those few bands where you're riding in someone else's car, listening to their homemade compilation cassette, and some song comes on, and you totally freak at how kick ass it is and how come you've never heard it before!?

For me it was riding around in Corpus Christi with a girl named Midi and the song was "Rags and Bones"... I still grin like an idiot from ear-to-ear everytime I hear that song and how well they out-ZZtop ZZtop themselves when it gets to the "the beast has arisen - all sins are forgiven" groove... and that whole album "Wrong" just fucking smokes.

...and if you're a fan and don't have that "In The Fishtank" EP... you are COMMANDED to go and get it ASAFP! SUPERIOR versions of "The River" and "Would We Be Alive" (oh but I'm such a sucker for Residents covers to begin with)... also I'm pretty sure I read that there's an additional drummer utilized on this EP (certainly sounds like it in some bits - and not in a bad way - well ok, maybe the version of 'Big Dick' is a little silly, but still... ).

Was worried back then that they were a band I'd never get to see live, but I have had the good fortune of seeing them twice here in St. Louis. Great energy amazing great shows. To sum up - NOT CRAP.

I believe you. I was probably wrong, but they seemed really uncomfortable around other people. I wanted to get to know them a little better but was unable to penetrate what I perceived to be a defensive shield.
