CRAP.

I don't enjoy their music.

Both of their records are great. 'So, Were They in Some Sort of Fight?" was hit and miss, but I guess that's to be expected from a singles comp. Yes, amazing band. NOT CRAP.

All I have is Flemish Altruism, and I think its not crap with a slight waffle for the fact that when I put it on, I end up ignoring it until little snippets peek out at me.

Some of the "screamy" parts remind me too much of those awful, overly-emotional bands with names that are too long. You know, the ones where there are more than one singer and they both writhe and wallow around on the ground fake-crying and screaming and maybe read some poetry over some bad guitar loops. Usually play solid state Crate or Peavey combos, or, if their parents are rich, a Blue Voodoo or Marshall Mode4 or something. ANYWAY, you get the picture...There's one in every town.. We got 3 or 4.

But, A MINOR FOREST! NOT CRAP! WF=2

Yes. I continue to listen to this album too. What's up with the Threnody Ensemble these days?

For my money: about as not crap as a band could possibly get.

Inindependence is a perfect album. Even the 18 minute song with the patch bay bullshit!

Is Andee C. playing drums w/ anyone?

That's my favourite song on the album. I listened to it during the morning run I've just returned from. Twice.

flemmish altruism is still lurking in my collection.
A better live band. that drummer was a monster. he couldn't be bothered to even face the crowd. Not Crap.

One of the best live bands I ever saw, hands down. Their legacy as a band was marred by a serious of perhaps unwise choices, in my opinion:

1. Signing to Thrill Jockey when no one gave anything from Thrill Jockey a chance that wasn't directly related to Tortoise or Chicago. But who didn't want to be on Thrill Jockey in 1996?

2. Rushing 2-day recording sessions out of Steve and Bob when waiting until they had more time and money would have benefitted the record immensely.

3. Releasing their most brilliant and well-conceived album last, after many folks had already given up and turned elsewhere.

Andee is not currently playing in a band, but he does own Aquarius Records in SF, arguably the best record store in America. So he has a good excuse for his inactivity.

John was in a wicked band called Hale Zukas in Oakland, but they have already split up. They were selling a self-produced 3" CD on the road that is definitely worth tracking down.

Erik still plays in Threnody Ensemble, who are currently working on a new album. He lives in New York, but I have yet to see him since I've lived here.

Thrill Jockey still releases records.

Chicago still stands.

TMI?
jdv.

Not crap. One of my favorites- I saw them at my college about 10 years ago with Dis-. They blew me away- bought everything they had to sell, including that 12" with all of the lockgrooves on it. Actually, that was a little annoying- it's really almost impossible to listen to that one song on vinyl, it was kind of nice to get the CD version later where I could hear it without bumping the record player every 30 seconds. They were great live as well.

Saw them again touring for Inindependence (great record), and they weren't as good- did some turntable stuff for about 20 minutes before their set, and then seemed kind of bored/unhappy. Maybe just a bad night?

Haven't gotten around to picking up Thernody Ensemble yet, it's been on my list, but never grabbed it.
