Simply one of the all time greats.

It is hard to argue against SS. Then again, I love almost all of his films (Dreams left me a bit head scratched).

I think that, after SS, I like Ran the best. It is the only one I ever saw in the theater upon its release.

The Yojimbo/Sanjuro nameless samurai duet is also great.

The non warfare oriented films like High and Low, Ikiru, and Stray Dog are also quite excellent.

One could go on and on.

All the earlier feudal movies with Toshiro Mifune (Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Roshomon and Throne of Blood,) are really great, and you'd like them if you like Seven Samuri. He did a great adaptation of an 87th precinct book, called High and Low (the movie, not the book, which is King's Ransom.)

I love everthing I've seen by him, but his movies can differ pretty greatly from eachother, so "be warned" or whatever.

Dreams is a beautiful movie.

don't mean to piss in the punchbowl here, but i always thought Kurosawa was sort of overrated. more to the point, i don't know why he's constantly name checked in magazines and various polls as one of THE great foreign directors of all time and yet a far superior filmmaker like Robert Bresson remains largely unknown here in the states. this is very strange to me.

anyone here check out the recent japanese film Nobody Knows by Hirokazu Kore-Eda? it's gotta be one of the greatest movies of our time. fucking brilliant on so many levels. i'd trade that movie alone for a whole shelf full of Kurosawa. it's deeply moving.
