Lo-buck field recording using " Digital Voice Recorder&q

I'd like to use a no-moving-parts recorder to capture music and sounds outside my "studio" area. No overdubbing, effects, etc. necessary - just the ability to offload files to a PC.

I realize the Edirol R-1 is the thing for this, but I can't afford it.

Anybody ever use an under-$100 Olympus (or other brand) "Digital Voice Recorder" for recording music?

Any other lo-buck memory-card recorders y'all can think of that might do OK for music?

Thanks for any replies. :?:

some of those olympus ones can have sample rates as low as 4 or 8kHz.

I tried to record an outdoor show with my mp3 player (creative zen nano plus), but there's no attenuator and so it just clipped the whole way through, even though it was recording from inside my purse.

My company rents Marantz PMD 670/671 solid state recorders. They record most formats to flash cards, and the A-D converters are decent. They are overpriced toys, but if a local house rents them, well...

OK, it's not exactly lo-buck, but M Audio is releasing a new portable recorder. It looks like it should be a promising piece of gear with plenty of i/o and recording quality options.

I've been video taping some shows recently and would love to have a better quality soundtrack. This may be the device that I need.
