I think my first experience with this was playing a gig with Ativin in 98.
There might have been another one before that but my mind is a little fuzzy when it comes to dates that far back.

I believe the band Scrawl was the first...at Lounge Ax in Chicago.
Grant Hart was the most recent (but already a couple of years ago).

i'm not sure which one was really *the* first one with out of town bands, but the first one with a memorable band was Chevy Heston at Lounge Ax. playing that show was hugely significant to me and my bandmates, as musicians and as people. this is either the second or third time i'm going to thank Mayfair for setting that show up. thank you Mayfair, thank you, thank you. and thank you Andy_Dragon for making me think about this wonderful show.
ug-hugs, all around!!:

somehow, the band i was playing/singing with in 9th grade got on the bill with a bunch of christian rock bands for Ghoti Hook's farewell tour (the Wisconsin date thereof). my band, Musabi, played with Hangnail, Ghoti Hook, and The Blamed (ha... real impressive list there).
it was a lot of fun. we closed with a cover of Operation Ivy's "Unity," and a bunch of kids up front tore the mic off the stage and sang the last refrain. and the Blamed gave me a free CD.

It wasn't the first, but one of the first was with the Coctails.
Hollywood Alley, Tempe (or is it Mesa).

My first serious band, Paden, played our third or fourth show to a packed crowd opening for Smog thanks to the help of Dave Pajo. He enjoyed what he had heard at a previous show and offered to help us and, at the same time, help him. It was to be the first Papa M show back in 1998 I believe. He told the promoter that we were the new players in Papa M helping him out. Then he mysteriously didn't show up and we saved the day by playing our tunes at the last minute. I think Dave couldn't really play the show or didn't want to for whatever reason and thought to help us.
Lucky breaks make all the difference in the world...

My first noteworthy experience would be opening for Mono. The girl in the band loved us and wanted to bring us to Japan.
Didn't happen.

Is this the Panoply Academy of Legionairres from Bloomington? If so, that's pretty cool.
I can't remember which of these two were first, but they were both in 1995:
Nada Surf
Spoon
This was long before Spoon was "hip", and right around the time that Nada Surf came out with their one hit, "Im Popular".
we thought we were so damn cool, we were 15! we were horrible.

This is one for the grandkids...
The first "out of town" band I played with was The Melvins at The University of Canterbury in New Zealand, with my first band Sun Tzu. They came down to the bar I worked at after and drank Red Bull...
