who do you prefer?
i myself prefer miles davis, the man who understands beauty in the understatement. who when asked by Coltrane what to do about all the notes he wants to play but can't replied, "take the fuckin' horn out ya mouth."

Coltrane because he never made bad 80's jazz.
Oh how Miles fell...

I'll take Miles.
His worst records were worse than Coltranes, but his best records were better. Really though, who can choose?
really very high indeed.

great poll!
I'm gonna have to go with coltrane only because I have more coltrane records than davis records. But yes, they are both amazing yet polar oposites. Kind of Blue was the peanut butter and jelly finaly coming together.
coltrane never inspired sub genres of music.....but west coast and fusion are shit.

Miles was only as good as his sidemen. Coltrane was incredible no matter what the setting. Champion Rabbit got it half right; Miles's worst records were worse than Coltrane's, but his best aren't as good as A Love Supreme, Meditations, or Live at the Village Vanguard. Plus, the ratio of CRAP to NOT CRAP in Miles's catalog is like an order of magnitude higher than that of Coltrane's.
It's no contest in my book: I'll take Trane any day of the week.

Rashaan Roland Kirk could play three saxes and a nose whistle at the same time.
Neither 'Trane nor Miles can fuck with that...

Tough call, but I gotta go Miles. And yes, I have the complete Village Vanguard set, and Love Supreme, and a buncha other Coltrane. I just seem to gravitate more to the Miles stuff, especially the Gil Evans collaboration material, and the Prestige sides. Sign me up for a high waffle factor though...

I listen to Miles more. John Coltrane's records are great but I don't know how you can make a substantiated argument that his records are "better" than Miles' records. Look at Miles Davis' trajectory though, late 40's to late 60's, west coast jazz to fusion and everything in between in 20 years. And Miles Davis was at the forefront of all of it.
