I knock these guys all the time. I used to be a huge fan. They haven't stood the test of time at all. They just seem horribly outdated to me. Yet, there is this small part of me that still holds on to the memories of loving this band.

I liked Tortoise back when they were a band - like on Millions.. and s/t. Back then they were a band with great bassines, great drum rhythms, and great overall orchestration. TNT straddled the line between what I liked about them then and what turns me off to them now. I'd lump TNT in the good albums category, but in hindsight it is the beginning of the end of them for me.
The last two records are just a studio on CD - a collection of rhythms, sound effects, and vintage signal processing designed to take the place of whatever spirit they had as a band unit on their earlier records. Honestly put any band through McEntire's studio and it might was well be another Tortoise record (case in point the Stereolab record he recorded a few years back). The newest Tortoise record was heartless kitchy crap which cemented them in my mind as little more than the house band for McEntire's studio.
Tortoise absolutely ruined the "studio as an instrument" concept for me - and I think it has ruined them as a band as well.

'tnt' is pretty good for the most part, but they pretty much dropped the ball after that
still, they are great to watch live and a big not crap for the first two recs.
