I think you'd be doing yourself a great disservice denying yourself new Lips material. One thing you can always count on from them is the element of surprise.

I wouldn't say that. I figured that a majority of the posts would be negative towards their current sound. Hell, even I at times actually wrestle with it. I've been a fan for over fifteen years and feel that even though The Soft Bulletin was soaring and ambitious, their best work is pre-The Soft Bulletin.

I saw the documentary The Fearless Freaks a few weeks ago and it brought up all of these fantastic feelings and emotions that I used to get back in their noisier period. I get the same sort of rush listening to Six Finger Satellite's "Save the Last Dance For Larry" as I do listening to "God Walks Among Us Now."

Like I said before, I still think they have a while to go before they're creatively bankrupt. I was just interested in reading some informed opinions on what the lot of you folk think about the Flaming Lips. We all love noise and for a good while the Lips excelled at creating a joyous racket.

Even though this seems like a better fit for Crap/Not Crap, I will try my best to answer the original question.

Yes, I think it is very possible for them to create inspiring music still, "Yoshimi" wasn't great but it wasn't bad either & Fight Test is a great song. It seems that their aesthetic has always been about doing new things that appeal to them and them alone. Does it always sound good? No, but I certainly have a great deal of respect for them and I still think that they are capable of making great music.

The Flaming Lips is a good band and I hope they still will be a good band for a long time.....although, for the first time, I'll listen to the new album first before buying it.
I still like them a lot, still hugely enjoy listening to "Transmissions From The Satellite Heart" and "In a Priest Driven Ambulance" but I lost my confidence for them....a little voice in my head says "Be carefull with the next Flaming Lips album, it's crap."

i like flaming lips. i think shooting yr peepee hole in response to yoshimi sounds not good, def worse than the actual record. although i want to cry when i think about their austin city limits... specifically when chan marshall pops in for a led zep rework. gaaaggggggg.

The new album is really fun. If you're expecting an overly earnest, goofy pop record, you won’t be disappointed.

I really, really like the old shit, especially Transmissions From The Satellite Heart, but the last album was wank, and most of the one before that. And last time I saw them live they sucked ass. I've given up on them. Sorry, H-GM.
