I am pondering your question, GhostFace. Could it've been a James McEllroy novel? Those are usually set in L.A. McEllroy is pretty good at the ugly details of a good mutilation -not crap! Look out for "L.A. Noir". He also wrote a good book on boxing called "Bloodsport".

as far as PKD stuff goes, i remember really being engrossed with Palmer Eldrich. it's a really hostile book and in an essay Dick even said, "i wish i'd never written it," but it's quite intersting. makes A Scanner Darkly seem LESS paranoid.

also, check out the Shifiting Realities of Philip K. Dick. it's got some golden essays and this mega-cryptic speech he gave in front of liek hundreds of people that's certifiably insane. it's hilarious.

if i ever have a deathbed book shelf, at least one of Philip K. Dick's novels will occupy it.
