trendy? what the fuck? the only person i know who is "lactose intolerant" gets seriously ill when he ingests dairy products. i don't see how this is anything like wearing a livestrong bracelet or caring about america's poor black population.

gmilner wrote:I hate when people say they're "lactose intolerant," because it sounds so whiny/trendy, but the fact is that a lot of dairy foods don't make me feel so good, and ice cream is one of them, so I mostly avoid it.

After eating foods with lactose in them, you may feel sick to your stomach.
Illustration of a man with stomach pains.

You may also have

* gas

* diarrhea

* swelling in your stomach

So trendy, the swelling of the stomach and flatulence! I am surprised more people do not jump on this bandwagon!

A related question: Can frozen yogurt be the equal of ice cream?

Not unless you are finding better frozen yogurt than I ever have.

Sherbet, on the other hand, may be in the running.

I can't believe I actually have to clarify this, but...Obviously, I am not denying that there is such a thing as lactose intolerance. I'm not denying that it can be a serious allergy. It is for this very reason that I'm making a point not to claim that I'm one of those people like your friend, for whom it is a very serious matter. I think many people--especially those who are not of Northern European ancestry--are to some degree lactose intolerant. I may be one of those people. But I also think that dairy products have certain adverse effects on people that are not related to lactose--mainly generating excess mucous and phlegm.

My apologies to anyone I've offended in the friends-of-those-with-lactose-intolerance community.

Actually, as I re-read the quote above, I realize: what the fuck are you talking about with that last sentence?

Ice Cream Snobs I have known would respond, "What does Italian hand made Gelato have to do with Ice Cream? Why would you bring up, in a thread about Ice Cream, a substance which is nothing like and far superior to Ice Cream? Are you trying to imply that Gelato has anything to do with Ice Cream, or, heaven forfend, that it is a type of Ice Cream, you philistine fuck?!"

Of course, they're wrong, but such are Ice Cream Snobs.

ILA, even if gmilner didn't get it.
Why do you make it so scary to post here.

i'm talking about our country's fleeting concerns about its poverty stricken african citizens after the way post-katrina relief was handled by the government. it was a pretty hot topic for a while in the media and elsewhere but, like all trends, it's reallly starting to fizzle out. the sad thing is that absolutely nothing has been done about it.

but i digress,

calling lactose intolerence trendy didn't offend me. i just thought it was a peculiar thing to say, like calling asthma trendy. but i realize now you were talking about people who "pretend" to be "lactose intolerant" and was perhaps maybe suspiscious that you meant that all along. sorry for the slight misunderstanding.

No worries--I totally misunderstood you. I thought you were saying anyone who professes to care about the poor is by definition trendy. And "trendy" was the wrong word for me to use--it's more like a lot of people misunderstand lactose intolerance, like a lot of people who are tired a lot claim to have "chronic fatigue," this being a specific condition. I had a friend who was diagnosed with it, and it didn't involve "fatigue" so much as a debilitating cognitive breakdown (e.g. seeing spots, unable to understand street signs, etc.)

Is it just me, or does Marsupialized work his "bangable" roommate into just about every thread?

Look, leave her out of this...I never even banged that girl.

stackmatic wrote:...but only with the red cherry candy shell that turns from the wet to the hard like magic trick...

The stackmatic serves truth. The hard shell is soft serv's saviour. Up here in the northland known as Bay View, WI there was on Howell Ave until last year a crazy Chinese food & soft serve stand (I speak truth!), and they had the old school 1970's Boy Blue hard shell multi-choices... not just chocolate & cherry but neon lime, grape, blueberry and orange. Blueberry hard shell! Lime! Some of you may not even know these wonders, but they are rare & true joys! Oh lost youth! Exclamations!!

Once I asked them if they could dip a cone in cherry. And then wait. And then dip it in lime.

They said no.

I follow that fact with this one: They closed because they lacked business.

Also, let me note that soft serv with the jimmy & crunch stuff is also a worthwhile pursuit. Hail crunch cone! And let us not forget the blizzard!

Once in a previous life when I worked in a library I had to look up and see if 'jimmy' in the soft serv/candy context had a component of racial slur in its etymology.

It doesn't.
