Astros fans have got to be having fits over this. (Bucky Dent, anyone?)

No doubt there will be endless whining about the blown call on Dye's foul ball, but none of this was automatic. The Sox managed to hit the ball over the fence when they had a chance to do so.

What a fantastic game. So far, I've enjoyed the Series immensely. I hope it fucking snows next Saturday. Sox in six.

I try to take bad calls (and this call was obviously bad) in context.

Wheeler made a terrible pitch on 3-2, nowhere near the strike zone. Dye did not swing at it.

The umpire's bad call had the effect of not allowing Wheeler to get bailed out by the pure luck of his crappy pitch hitting the bat. It should not have been called that way, but there was justice in it.

I'd also say that Houston got the benefit of bad calls on at least 2 of Jenks' pitches in the AB which led to a walk, which in turn led to their comeback in the 9th.

Angus: Agreed -- It was a bad pitch that happened to hit the knob of Dye's bat. But for the sake of consistency, this is always ruled a foul ball, regardless of intent on the batter's part. It's kind of a bullshit rule because in nearly every case the batter is clearly bailing out, and it's a huge stretch to imagine that he's trying to make some sneaky sort of bunt.

But rules is rules, and they should apply equally in all circumstances. The umpire blew the call.

My point, I guess, is that the umpire made a mistaken call -- one that ultimately served the spirit of the game -- when the letter of the rule would have required him to call the pitch a foul ball. Very weird. Either the stupid rule should be changed or the umpires should enforce the stupid rule with consistency. Otherwise, we have controversy and whining from the aggrieved party. Astros fans, understandably, would like to see the letter of the rule enforced in this situation. [And to think that I skipped this whole exegesis in my original post for the sake of brevity . . . ] Whew.

Shorter chrysler post: The Sox caught a break and made the most of it. Good for them.

also sorta thought it was payback in the 9th

which is to be expected

actually hit the barrel

weird play. ausmus' glove was right in front of the ump's face.

as angus says, the call meant wheeler didn't get a break on his bad pitch. he was all over the place, anyway, so i don't think it's really that big a deal.

konerko loading up on qualls, that was a pretty big deal

and s.p. homering off lidge is just...wtf

tuesday. i would fly to houston if i could get tickets.

People hear are "blaming" the Sox's success on botched calls. I think this is just what people do when their team doesn't play well enough to win a game. Or you're simply ignorant.

Living in Houston and supporting Chicago...I'm really getting to see the darker side of some people. I understand supporting your team to no end, but do you have to act like fucking boneheads about it?

I have "friends" here that won't talk to me. Can you believe it? Because of baseball?

I really feel like I am hated by 4 million people right now. It's starting to feel really good.

Oh, just for the record, we didn't win because of poor officiating, Astros' pitching or even Konerko's BEAUTIFUL GRAND SLAM. The Sox won because I wore my "Snakes on a Plane" shirt. I have adopted the movie's title as my code for "Go Sox" if I'm in a bar that seems unfriendly to my kind. Lately, these places are any establishments with a television.

I'll be at Game 4. 14th row from the 1st base line in right field. Maybe I'll make an EA themed sign or, better yet, SNAKES ON A PLANE!
