i just dont have the money or the internet connection to check out all the bands that i feel like i'm supposed to know about. i have a long list of bands i've "heard of" but never heard. so i just wanted to know from some of you other folks: which bands that are considered "essential" by your average record store clerk, have you never had the time/money/desire to listen to?
my list includes:
-belle and sebastian
-guided by voices
-sonic youth (saw them live once, but i have no clue what their records sound like)
-sebidoh
so yeah, this is potentially emabarrssing. but i'm sure theres at least one person here who's never gotten around to buying 'spiderland'. please speak up.

2For some reason, Die Kreuzen has always remained on my list of ignorance. I'd like to learn about them, including how to pronounce their name correctly.
To answer your questions, Mr. Run Around On Fire, please note:
Belle and Sebastian: Every second of every song by this band is an aural dictionary entry for the word "twee". Some people really like Belle and Sebastian. I do not, and I do not recommend their records. And I like pussy shit!
GBV: Once a very great and mighty band. I suppose the obvious starting point is "Bee Thousand".
Sonic Youth: Once a very great and mighty band. If you want their best work, buy/borrow "EVOL", "Sister" or "Daydream Nation".
Sebadoh (or, more properly, seBADoh): Never did a whole lot for me. I always liked Dinosaur Jr. much better.

3sebadoh! yum! i'd recommend the album "Take A Look Inside..." by the Folk Implosion. i guess it's not really sebadoh then, huh. but that's the best barlow album that i've heard. if there's better, than DAMN! cause that's a great album. or i think so, anyways.

i too was ignorant about Die Kreuzen, then found a used cd of theirs from the early 90's that was horrible so i didn't investigate any further.

6For all of my prog-savvy tastes, I have to admit I don't know a whole darn lot about MAGMA.
But I digress. Please continue with the squirrel circuit semantic debate.

Get Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh immediately and work your way backwards and forwards from there. One of my all time favorite bands!

9Yes, great topic.
Let's see:
Pere Ubu, yes.
King Crimson (only heard maybe 5 songs, and don't know what albums they came from).
Big Black (haw-haw)
Heavy Vegetable
I'm sure there are more.... SILKWORM was on the list until about a month ago, when I stumbled upon a vinyl copy of 'Lifestyle' in the bargain bin at my local record store. Been in heavy rotation since then....
OK.
