By the way, after nearly thirty years I still don't get the intro to Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll." Is there an extra beat in there?

I know. I think Bonzo may be starting on the 4 count and not on the 1.... It's messed up.

Same thing with the beginning of the Beatles "I Want To Hold Your Hand". It just kind of tumbles into existence. Where is the down beat. Huh?

Fills continued;

Leonard Haze, Yesterday and Today - "Come On Over"...Lots of wacky right foot work, you'd swear it was double bass, but it isn't. 1976 too, way before those lame "twin kick drum pedals on one bass drum" things were made.

Steve Shelly, Cat Power - "Good Clean Fun"

Quint, Electric Prunes - Live version of "You Never Had It Better" from the Stockholm '67 lp.

Tyrone Lampkin (?), Funkadellic - Live version of "Maggot Brain".

Dave Mattacks, Fairport, Thompson, etc. - Almost all his fills are great.

I think everyone who's posted so far is both a nerd and a drummer, but you're probably right about everyone else.

I'm not a drummer; I'm a guitarist. For whatever reason, though, I often find myself listening specifically to the drumming on any given record rather than the actual notes being played.

This, more than anything else, probably explains my affinity for the smashing pumpkins.

there's some fill mac macneilly does, i think it's in something on "shot" (i know, i know!) possibly "mailman." he only does it once, and it's an easy little fill, but just that he does it once, and how it comes out of nowhere. anyways...i'm gonna second the zeppelin "achilles..." cymbals fill.

1. Tony Williams - Nefertiti [ [take 4] Jun 7, 1967]

2. Ringo Starr - Strawberry Fields Forever

3. Joe Chambers - [Wayne Shorter - Etcetera]

4. Elvin Jones - anything uptempo from 1964-65 esp. Pursuance, Transition

5. Tony Williams - Pick a track from Emergency!

I agree that most of the other poster's suggestions are great.. I just thought these kinds of drumming were underrepresented in this thread.
