1st SATURDAY IN MAY: The Kentucky Derby

Yesterday was quite a day.

First, I heard a tip from the guy on the radio, who is supposed to be a great handicapper and has helped everyone at that radio station win money on the horses in the past.

So, when my girlfriend got in town Friday night, I explain that I heard about a horse to pick, and I think it would be fun if we either went to the OTB or put $20 on this horse at one of the internet betting sites.

Saturday, after breakfast, with about three hours to the race, we decided to stay home, put $30 on our horse on the internet. ($20 for me, $10 for her).

Everything is great, we're getting excited for the race, etc.

When we deposited the $30 into the online betting site, we got a 20% bonus which gave us a free $6. About half an hour before the race, I said, "why don't we put that $6 on one of the long-shots? You never know." She agreed, and we were gonna pick WILKO, but neither of us really care for Wilco, so we decided that we like GIACOMO better. He has a great name, and he's a perfect 50 to 1 shot.

So, I go about making the bet, but the site is so busy that it's tough to get through. Obviously, there's a late minute rush to get those picks in. When I do get though and submit my ticket, the site reports back "You do not have enough funds to compete this transaction". WTF? I'm staring at my account balance of $6 at the top of the same screen. I keep trying, with no luck, until minutes before the start of the race when I finally say F it, and we're just gonna have to watch and cheer on our $30 horse, HIGH LIMIT, a 12 to 1 shot.

...

(It turns out that in order to be able to use your 20% deposit bonus, you have rollover the amount of your deposit+bonus at least twice at the site.)

In the hours since the race, my girlfriend and I have discussed all the reasons that we can't blame ourselves, or the web site, for not having an extra $264 right now.

Anyway, that's my 2005 Kentucky Derby story.

no winners for me either. my long shots were buzzards bay and wilko.
during the winners party at the museum i meant to ask steve buttleman the official bugler about playing the call to post before the shellac show. guess i'll have to next time, he plays for events here at the museum on occasion.
i did meet giacomo's owner, trainer, and whoever else was with them. oh yea, the trophy and rose garland.

SA: We played a show in Louisville and the bugler from the Churchill Downs racetrack started the show playing that bugle call. He came out in his racing skins, in his silks.
BW: He had on the whole red shirt, white pants, big black boots.
SA: He had this yard long bugle. It was fantastic! He's the guy who blows the Kentucky Derby every year. Have you ever seen some of these guys who blow trumpets every day for decades? Their lips end up looking like a fucking doormat!
