I paid around $8 for shellac in Nashville a few weeks ago, which is just over £4.
several things here:
1) london is one of the most unbelieveably expensive cities in the world. it just gets sillier. the cost of living in the UK is much higher than most other Western countries. but hey, we have free healthcare.
2) tickets are generally slightly more expensive in london than the rest of the UK. infrequent touring bands can charge more due to rarity value. even fugazi were £9 ($16.50) - although i don't really mind paying anything to see fugazi.
3) stargreen along with ticketbastard and all the others charges the most outrageous internet/phone booking fee. more than that they have the gall to charge you £2.50 for postage and packing. and if you buy five or more tickets off these fuckers, they charge you about £5. for an unregistered envelope! for sheer nerve it takes some beating.
obviously this state of affairs is evil and bad and it sucks hard. buying direct is getting trickier as venues hand over their ticketing to these mercenaries; a lot of box offices open less hours or don't exist anymore.
4) i bought my shellac tix direct from stargreen's office in town. they still charge you some booking though. i have a small amount of evidence that venues/promoters release less physically available walk in and buy em tickets in favour of selling everything on the web cos they all make more money.
5) foundation, the promoters, are great (they do ATP), but i wouldn't be surprised if they bumped the price up a bit as they knew it would sell out. last london shellac gig (same venue, same promoters) was cheaper.
6) most little indie gigs are £4-5 to get in. it's these bigger venue in-advance tickets where you are fucked.
to sum up: ticket companies print tickets and money in equal fucking measure.
