As I mentioned above, I like mixing on these speakers quite a bit. For a while, they were hooked up to a Crown amp, but after that was replaced with a 150 watt Hafler they really came alive. The Tannoys would probably sound fine with the amp you have, but an upgrade to a modern high slew-rate, high damping amp really gives these speakers tight well defined low end, and an precise but not harsh or brittle high end.

That's my recommendation for your budget, and I'm fairly amazed that those speakers go for so little now - I'm tempted to pick a pair up in town.

If you end up using passive monitors the amp really makes a massive difference to the sound. Most will be alright, some brilliant, but equally some amps just dont fit well with certain speakers.

I mixed for some time on a fairly flat hifi system tht i was familiar with, but always ended up burning off mixes and going around listening to them on different systems. Ended up getting fairly ok mixes, and it gave me the chance to be more obective about the overall sound rather than what was being played and how different systems would represent it.

Still cant beat a proper pair of monitors though, NS10s and genelecs been doing it for me recently. The difference between mics and positioning will suddenly become really apparent.

i don't have access to my amp right now but i found out a picture and it looks like it's a Traynor PM100... as always i don't know too much about it, but i have the feeling it won't be good for critical applications such as mixing. comments?

am i correct to assume the general feeling here is passive monitors are better than active?

the Tannoys defaintly have my eye right now...

i could really use advice on power amps if mine isn't any good. would something as simple as this work? http://www.steelsound.com/product.cfm?ProductID=802
