Tower Records filing for bankruptcy

I buy 95% of my books online. Most of the non-online books are those I get at art museum book stores.

I sometimes feel bad about giving my business to B&N or Amazon. But I can usually get a good price and it's just so easy.

For buying used or out of print books *if* you know the title you are looking for online is fantastic. It's almost like "out of print" doesn't apply anymore because so many used bookstores have their inventory merged into one or more of the online sites.

(Of course some out of print books go for such inflated prices that they might as well be unavailable.)

The same fucking excuse, "I know they're bad, but I shop there 'cause they're so cheap". As long as citizens refuse to take responsibility for the 'real' impact of their economic decisions we will only see more Wal-marts, more Hummers, and a fucking Walgreens on each corner (and I really want to know what the Walgreens corporate overseers consider market saturation - becuase here it seems to be one store per 1/4 square mile). Few people seem to grasp the big picture nowdays - even so called 'activist' types.

I'd like to see individuals start accepting a modicum of accountability for where they decide to spend their money rather than giving it to the lowest bidder a-la federal contract.

You know it's gotten to be a sad state when you're lamenting the loss of Tower Records for Christsakes!

This is pretty much how I feel about the whole thing. Yeah, Wal-Mart and Target and Best Buy do shitty things and drive other places out of business, but only because of people's willingness to support them.

Living in Buttfuck, Iowa, the closest thing to a real record store around here is a used CD store or Sam Goody. Pretty depressing. I am forced to order about 95% of my CD's and 100% of my records online. Hey, if anyone knows a store near Waterloo that actually fucking sells vinyl records that I somehow don't know about, let me know.

Overpriced as fuck, but at least they had the shit.

Was about to say the same thing... there won't be a concrete place to go visit to get a succinct classical selection. All online now. (Believe it or not, Amoeba's classical never rivalled any single Tower's either... even though they had a decent one) :(

I called the store. They're closing "sometime in December" probably before Christmas. Everything is 20% off. Not much of a break! Regardless, I'm going to check it out after work today and see just how picked over everything is. Isn't 20% off just like buying something from Amazon, though? Anyway, I'm really going to miss having a record store around that's open until midnight. Really, that was my favorite thing about them. You could have insomnia on a Sunday night and they'd be open. Ah well...

They carry my band's CD, so they can't be THAT selective. ;)

Even if Tower's closing had anything to do with Wal-Mart, i can't see Wal-Mart's ever-extending arm of capitalist excess choking the life out of record stores i actually enjoy going to, like Atomic, Rush-Mor or Reckless.

Meh. Neither Crap nor Not Crap--i can't work up the energy to care (but i apparently can work up the energy to post about why i don't care).

I used to have a Tower like 10 minutes away from my house and there would be days where I would be bored out my mind with nothing to do and I would just go to Tower to poke around, it was great. And it was also my Ticketmaster outlet...

There were Saturday nights in high school were my buddy and I would drive to the city to hunt for records and Tower on 4th was always worth checking out. I thought they had a great selection and once in awhile I'd come across some gems. I remember getting Chelsea Girl for like 8 bucks once.

In terms of price I find FYE and the other mall record stores much more of a rip off. Too bad they couldn't of fallen off the radar.

Stinky CRAP.
