Does anyone like hip-hop? Well, I guess I kinda like it. I'm not a fan, I own hardly any albums that can be lumped in the genre, but here and there I've heard some great songs in incidental/accidental habitats. It's a popular genre, which means 90% of it is crap and sounds the same, but that's true of any popular genre. There's a lot of importance played on mood and texture rather than craftsmenship-like songwriting, which disappoints me (I have the same complaint about white-boy pursuits like electronica and jam bands as well, so lay off the racism charges for awhile) but when a real songwriter takes hold of the genre, there's some neat things to be explored. Unfortunately, I haven't heard a lot of that, but I know it's out there.

i love hiphop the same way that i love punkrock. which is to say, there's a lot of stupid shit and a lot of filler, but there's some amazing albums that make the little hairs on the back of my neck stand up. i would not make music the way that i make music had i not been fully immersed in hiphop and punkrock. this is not any sort of conscious choice; i just can not fathom making music in any other way.




also - i've mentioned it before, but edan's "beauty and the beat" is phenomenal and you should be listening to it right now.

And yes, another vote for those who really like hip-hop. No one's mentioned Gang Starr yet, but Guru probably has the best battle/put down rhymes in the mainstream. If you haven't heard, please check out "Take It Personal" and "Now You're Mine."

What's hyphy? I've just listened to the new Dj Shadow album, and a lot of people are complaining about it been too hyphy ridden.
