Source Tags & Codes, Madonna and the first record are all excellent.
They truly blow these days (I mean, they REALLY suck now), the break-shit-on-stage shit is ridiculous and the album art is...
But I don't see how you can deny the bad-assery on the aforementioned records.
Listen to them.
NOT CRAP

32I saw these guys once, right after the CD on Trance, and was unimpressed.
I heard Madonna and thought it was great. It didn't need to be groundbreaking, just some good songwriting.
This extended over onto Source, Tags, & Codes. While I don't think this record is a 10 (WTF, Pitchfork?), I do think it's really good.
I heard a little bit of their newest record. It kinda blew.
I just ignore the whole "act" of ...Trail of Dead, and listen to those two albums, as if they were written by some anonymous, nameless, band.
NOT CRAP (high waffles)

A band that needs two drummers.

34i have never heard TOD's music, but judging by the posts in this thread it looks like i'm not missing much...
one question: can they be cathegorized as "emo"? (that would be the final nail on the coffin for me)

35I will go with NOT CRAP but a pretty high Waffle factor.
I loved seeing them play house parties as a 2-piece back in Austin in the mid-90's when they would always be looking for an opening slot. Conrad and Jason didn't mind when you stomped on their pedals in the middle of songs or starting pressing down on their frets in the middle of songs, there was a great energy to their performances. Their equipment would usually get trashed, but mostly by the crowd and not them. I left Austin and went back two years later, saw they were playing and went to go see them and they were a four-piece, a full on band. They sounded good, but the energy wasn't as manic as it had been before.
I bought their first few releases and went to a few of their shows a few years back, but the new songs don't do it for me. NOT CRAP for their early stuff, certainly moving into crap with more recent releases...

36i saw these cats on the Source Tags tour. they broke their stuff and writhed around in the crowd. of the two albums i've heard they seem to hit you with a really great song and then two annoying ones and then another great one. Madonna and Source Tags sound completely terrible and will only sound worse with time. For that they get a CRAP.

40I thought Madonna on the overall was really good. Lots of different sounds on that disc. I never knew really what to make of it, in an intangible but good way.
Source Tags & Codes is really hit or miss. The first 2 tracks and the last 3 or 4 are amazing. A few of the songs on here are scary bad though.
The guitar sounds are really incredible at times. They use alot of alternate tunings with unison strings, and get really nice tone and distortion. I think there's one guy in the band that is pretty badass on the drums as well.
Although the Trail of the Dead have put out some of the most hideous tracks of all time... when they are on, it's fucking brilliant in my opinion.
NOT CRAP... 1 waffle
