I always thought punk was supposed to be about tearing down idols, going against the norm, and destruction (possibly for the purpose of rebuilding, or just for the fun in it.)

But when it's something these punks immortalize they get all sentimental and therefore hipocritical when they want to save it.

And for once I agree with what BadComrade has said.

'Smash it up' and build something better.

I bet if I was around here in the 80's and going to hardcore matinee's I'd be sad to see it go.

See, here's the thing.

I was here in the 80's, and I did go to my share of hardcore matinees.

My first rock show was at CBGB.

So I have nostalgia for it in spades.

But I'm an adult, and I realize that the CBGB that has been around in the past few years is not the place I went as a teenager. It could never live up to that idealized memory. Even worse, it actually wasn't any good any longer. I think the last show I saw there was the Boredoms, a few months before Vision Creation Newsun came out.

I'm trying to think of a comparable place for Chicagoans - the Cubby Bear? Dreamerz? If a place like that had stayed past its prime, would you be sad it was gone? Or would you be pissed that it declined and sucked, and then closed?
I make music/I also make pretty pictures

It's funny, I was just telling Johnny13 that my first punk rock show was seeing Suicidal Tendencies open up for Black Flag at a Caberet Metro all ages show. I don't feel nostalgic about the Metro. Doesn't really occur to me to even stop by anymore.

But I really miss Dreamerz. I have a great memory of watching Rapeman play while the El passed in back visible through the glass brick windows. And I miss the old Hot House even though that was short-lived.

But there are plenty of places that I haven't even been to. Never been to Shubas or Double Door... Empty Bottle is pretty great. One of the few places that inspires positive feelings. But like I said, I'm probably a little out-of-touch with the current Chicago places.

CBGBs.

Die, already. The CB's rent fiasco was a goofy tale on the the surface - punk club rails against greedy landlord. Then you scratch the surface.

Still, many fine shows at CB's.

Jesus Lizard
Helmet
Converge
Volcano Suns
Cows
Poster Children
Isis
Dillenger Escape Plan
The Giraffes
The Blues Explosion
Hum
Tar
Hammerhead
This year! - Made Out of Babies was smoking

AbcNoRio is better for the matinee. C-Squat is scummier. Union Pool is more charming. But your sdound system was the best in the city.

The club, the angle of the stage, perching up by the monitors and not buying a drink because I was there to see the band...

Fond memories. Fond memories, but really all gone a while ago.

Die already. Die. You're an ex-girlfriend.

I can imagine people are wearing CBGB's shirts that don't know what they mean. I think Hilly must have been making lots more on the shirts than the club, I think the boutique is moving over to Broadway near the present location. I believe most people wearing Von Dutch apparel have no idea who Von Dutch was.

I will miss CBGB's I think in a lot of places they would have found a way to keep a tourist attraction like it open, in that respect I think it was undervalued. New York is a town that is completely about money and nothing else is valued (except in dollars).

As far as it being good or bad in terms of shows lately that tends to vary with the quality of the acts locally which seem to get real good at some point each decade with long patches of so - so bands. As well I think the woman who was the booker left the club about 10 years ago and the next person increased the number of bands to a larger number each night. As well many acts that would have played there have moved to larger venues like Irving Plaza where you can make more money.

I played there dozens of times in several different scenes most reciently this year at the Joey Ramone Birthday Party. It is a place that I visit in my dreams (like the A7 club and 8BC or god forbid Danceatera) and sometimes my nightmares too.

Defunct Chicago clubs I liked -- Lounge Axe - photo machine (take a picture of youself during the show if you were wireless) and good Mexican food in walking distance.

Amen. The 14-24 year old kids wearing T-shirts in London definitely don't know what RAMONES stands for.
