What distortion pedal do you use?

I work for Electro-Harmonix.

I like our Double Muff (which is a 'double' Muff Fuzz effect not a double Big Muff) it's like a dirty volume-boost in 'single' mode and like a Distortion + with more output volume in 'double' mode.

the DOD OD 250 is great

the Big Muff is good for very fuzzed out sustaining notes. Chords become very intermodulated and veiled. I'm not a huge fan of the Big Muff in general but if you know how to use it it can be great.

our LPB 2ube is a great distortion box when you cascade the 1st stage into the 2nd stage...

I'm not sure I understand... I'll see if I can give you a geeky answer:

the Big Muff is unlike most other distortion boxes, it is a 'fuzz' or 'clipping' effect. it has 4 gain stages. 2 of the stages have clipping circuits. it makes for a severe 'clipping' or 'square wave' effect.

most other 'distortion' pedals have less clipping . the only pedal I can think of that comes close would be the Ibanez Tube Screamer.

so when we came out with the Hot Tubes and the LPB 2ube they we're marketed as 'overdrive' effects.
so I guess as of recently boutique companies like Frantone, Z-vex offer stuff that would be competing in the same market.

previously ProCo, MXR/Dunlop, DOD were probably our nemesis.

Boss can and always will suck my dick.

David

i have a few different pedals that i don't use all at once. the one that's always in the mix is the Super Duper, mostly to add a little edge to whatever tone is in question.

for fuzz - snarling dogs Black Dog
for dist/crunch - 80's boss DS1
for something in between those - tech21 xxl

the reason i use these pedals varies. with regard to the Super Duper and the Black Dog, i had borrowed about 10 or so different gain-adjusting pedals from a friend when i first bought my amp, and the Super Hard On and the Black Dog were the two that sounded the best, to me. so i bought a Super Duper and a Black Dog. the DS1 i've had since the 80's, back when i was in highschool and didn't know shit about shit, anybody coulda sold me any pedal if they convinced me it was cool. most of the pedals i have from back then are gone, but when it comes to mega-gain metal crunch or just a really searing distortion in general, that pedal still really does the trick. and the xxl, i was just talking with endofanera a few months ago about how i needed another distortion pedal since i wasn't quite getting all the sounds i wanted, and he suggested that one. since he's never steered me wrong before, about anything really, i tracked one down on ebay. i've only played guitar a couple times since acquiring that pedal, and one of those times it was to add a guitar solo to an alt-country song, so there was no distortion there. so i've only used the thing for a matter of minutes so far. it seems to me like it does big distortion sounds really well, like, lots of distortion. as far as a slightly-broken-up sound, i don't know if i really got it to do that very well.

most of my distortion, btw, comes from my amp, not from any pedal. the pedals are just there to kick it over the top, or to change the character of the distortion. but if i plug my guitar straight into my head, if i play it hard, it's plenty distorted, and if i play it soft or roll down the volume knob, it's clean. so the majority of the distortion is coming from the tubes in the amp. even the Super Duper, the way i usually have it set, it's just causing the amp to break up quicker.

Main:
EHX Hot Tubes (main distortion, creamy and crunchy)

EHX Graphic Fuzz (lead: in combination with hot tubes, alone: different tonal distortion)

Flavors:
Boss OD (to get that shitty solid state tone in conjunction with other pedals)

Boss Octave (for nasty nasty fuzz with the 2 EHX's)

All of these are in my chain at all times.
