I also like Take Fountain quite a bit. If Gedge had to start using the Wedding Present name again to stop making dull ass Cinerama records, thats fine by me.

That said, I'd love to see a reunion of the Bizarro-era lineup only playing songs up to and including Seamonsters. But that'll probably never happen.

The Peel box is kind of disappointing as far as song selection. It's like "The Worst of the Wedding Present," with none of their best songs and multiple versions of stuff from Mini and Saturnalia. Both of the live recordings are from 1996, which is when they were way past their prime, and nothing highlights the Bizarro/Seamonsters period.

Gedge has become a stronger songwriter, but he really needs to start writing riffs and intros again. A lot of the later stuff (and Cinerama stuff as well) starts with Gedge taking a breath and singing in the first measure. It makes the songs kind of blur together.

again i point to take fountain... a solid intro from the first second, plenty of riffage. totally awesome.

That's a great album, but I still wouldn't mind intros to "Mars," "It's For You," "Larry's," "Queen Anne," and "Perfect Blue." Oh, and they shouldn't have stuck track 2 and 3 next to each other since they start with almost the same riff, but that's being picky.

Did anyone say anything yet about how "Shake It" from Watusi sounds amazingly like the Strokes? It's not one of their better songs or albums, but it would be weird if they took their sound from this song.

The last three music related Crap/Not Crap threads I've bumped have been started by Placeholder. Weird.

From Scopitones: Wedding Present/Cinerama site

The Wedding Present are currently recording tracks for a new album in Steve Albini's Electrical Audio studio in Chicago. The long-player, which is scheduled for a spring release will be the first Wedding Present record to be engineered by Albini since Seamonsters in 1991, although he has worked with David Gedge's other band, Cinerama on several occasions.

The recordings have apparently been going very well, although, when the band needed to play one of the new songs again in order to get a guitar part right, Albini was heard to say "Don't drive yourselves crazy doing it over and over… and by 'yourselves' I mean me!"

David, Terry, Chris and Graeme have also become addicted to 'electricals', frothy coffee drinks invented by Albini himself.

The name of the album is El Rey.

Cinerama is Not Crap.

Oh sweet lord, I can't wait. Take Fountain, while it had some good songs, was pretty tame by WP standards. I think the production had a lot to do with that.

George Best: Eh. I could take or leave it. Not a huge fan of the early hyper-jangly WP

Bizarro, Seamonsters, Watusi: All great

Saturnalia: Pretty good
