Personally I think a pregnant woman should be eating dairy..I don't see how one could afford all the supplements throughout and beyond pregnancy and wouldn't it get kind of boring? And what if your cravingv was un-vegan?

My friend told me last night that she and her boyfriend have both gone vegan but that she still eats chocolate and they ate 2 cakes last week. I printed off a list of vegan alcohol for her. She appreciated that.

Next thing she told me was that they are trying for a baby.

I said "and you're still moving to Manchester in August? And trying to be vegan?"

Last night she also had a few rum and cokes and had a couple of arguments that held no water. I said to her " you think you might already be pregnant?"
She said "I just had a period last week"
"That makes no difference" I said.

She just recently ended some crappy affair with one of our co-workers.

Is it me or what?

hey wasn't it just like a week ago when a couple (from buckhead/atlanta) were sentenced life in prison for killing their baby, having raised it on a vegan diet of "organic apple juice and soy milk?" not that this has anything to do with an ideal vegan diet, i mean these people birthed their kid in a bathtub and never took it to a hospital for fear of germs... also, a vegan couple in new york were sentanced to life in prison for a similar situation... and a vegan couple in florida got manslaughter for killing their kid with an inappropriate vegan diet. so i guess the moral of the story is... whatever's clever, but DO YOUR FUGGIN' RESEARCH!

Yes.

SATURDAY, May 5 (HealthDay News) -- In another sign of the alarming childhood obesity epidemic in the United States, researchers report a 200 percent increase in the number of children hospitalized for type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes, which used to be called adult onset diabetes because it was rarely seen in children, is typically diagnosed in patients who are overweight. Left untreated, it can lead to such complications as heart disease, blindness, nerve damage and kidney damage.

The dramatic increase in pediatric type 2 diabetes occurred nationwide between 1997 and 2003, according to the study by researchers at New York University School of Medicine.

"The rapid rise in childhood obesity is now common knowledge," said Dr. David Katz, director of Yale University School of Medicine's Prevention Research Center, who was not involved in the study. "Increasingly, so is the concurrent rise in type 2 diabetes in children -- a generation ago, this condition did not exist. What is now called type 2 diabetes was called adult onset diabetes until quite recently."

"Epidemic childhood obesity has transformed a chronic disease of mid-life into a pediatric scourge," Katz added.

For the study, Dr. Rhonda Graves, a pediatrician, and her colleagues used data from nationwide hospital discharge records from 1997, 2000 and 2003. They compared the trends in hospitalization rates, length of stay and costs for children with type 2 diabetes and type 1 diabetes.

They found that rates of hospitalization for type 1 diabetes increased 15 percent between 1997 and 2003, while rates of hospitalizations for type 2 diabetes increased 200 percent.

"These findings, based on hospital records of a nationally representative sample of hospitals in the U.S.A., indicate that type 2 diabetes is increasingly becoming a pediatric illness that results in hospitalizations. It is associated with a very serious number of co-morbidities and complications which may have profound health implications both in childhood and in adulthood," Graves said in a prepared statement.

Graves' team also found that hospitalizations for type 2 diabetes were 1.3 times more likely for boys than girls. Children 9 to 12 years old had the highest rates of hospitalization.

But maybe we can find another one example of kids that have succumbed to their parents' nazi-hippie dispositions!

Because it represents the possibility of individual political action, and conscious self-denial for the sake of the betterment of others (animals in this case). This is not a concept that many are comfortable with.

Im comfortable with your concept. It's just Im more comfortable eating a medium rare cow patty with bacon and a large helping of dairy on top. Oh, individual political action is possible and it is represented in my life.

Hmmm, speaking of individual political action. This reminds me of the time I was in a great Sushi restaurant. I was in there early, and the chef proudly asked me which Salmon should be killed for the evenings Salmon sashimi and courses. I pointed at one salmon in the tank and the chef caught it with his net, put in on the cutting board, and yelled "showtime." Mind you, I was not in a english speaking country so the yelling of showtime had me laughing my ass off. Then it happened, in one clean swoop of the blade the head was on the floor and the fish lay flapping on the cutting board. Great memory and that was some of the freshest fish I have ever eaten.

Wait what were we talking about? Ah yea, a good "political action" experience for you vegans. Hey maybe you can all discuss the Woody Harrelson endorsed book Raw. while eating......raw food.....and then eat a veggie burger, chicken, bacon or whatever else you've flavored soy/tofu as these days because you know you want the real thing!!!! You guys are like so individually groundbreakingly political....when it comes to food.

another thing that carnivores like to do to vegetarians and vegans, in my experience, and as demonstrated in the above post is to try and denigrade and insidiously try and make vegans and vegetarians feel stupid for their decision by talking about the goodness in what they might be missing. almost always, the carnivorous diatribe includes some gory description of killing some animal. "You had to be there!" nyuk nyuk...

I am sure there are more babies who die from malnutrition, salmonella,e coli, unclean water and unsanitary conditions than these media-hyped "vegan baby and wacky liberal left wing commie pinko lesbian hippie vegan parent" stories... however Nancy Grace and Sean Hannity won't be talking about them since poverty and unsanitary conditions that make those other deaths possible are kind of "boring" and they usually affect people who aren't white and privileged..

I'm sure there are. But that doesn't make it acceptable for white and privileged people to damage their offspring in some piss-brained stab at the moral highground.

No one said it was acceptable. I am saying the media is choosing to focus on this story because of its shock value to people like you, not on the basis of what is right and wrong.

Also, all vegetarians and vegans don't think they are necessarily taking the moral high ground. It's the nutty few (the "vegan reich" and "PETA") and the media that make this lifestyle appear militant and unfliching.

As I have already stated, me and my veggie friends get more militant BS from meat-eaters than any of us have ever dished out on anyone.

Same. Also get made the subject of quite a lot of jokes due to it.

I also get, "So when did you stop liking food?" a lot.

I have never responded, "So when did you decide to fill up yr colon with rotting, undigested meat?"
