It's a bit of a trade-down.

And yet, the flyer for the Triple Rock show made it look like you guys are really proud to be from Edina (what did they say, like, "Mise en Place, from Edina--yes, Edina!"). I thought that was pretty rad, even if the sound guy was all "why the fuck would they act like they're proud of that?"

Oh, a-and -

A good things about music in Portland, Maine is a fair number of people turn out regularly for local punk, metal, noise, and hardcore bands, which is good. A bad thing is that a lot of good national touring indie acts, if they play here at all, go unnoticed.

Yet, an 80s cover band called The Awesome regualrly sell out Portland clubs. Fuck me.

The best is when people don't get the joke and think that we really are Edina cake-eaters and are proud to announce it to the world*.

Our very first practice as a band I said, "if we ever get a show, we should say we're from Edina instead of Minneapolis". It was a dumb idea that's gone way to far. It became a part of our stickers, our EP, our new record (that will be out in the next few weeks...Iswear) has Edina all over the artwork. Our shirts...It's getting out of hand.

I did live in Edina for awhile, and they do have really good cake there.

And, sorry, but Hot Water Music. Although this may be a crime in the county of Alachua.

I would not say Gainesville is worse off because of Less Than Jake. Many years ago, before the heavy ska influence, they were a fun, brainless pop-punk band.

As far as Hot Water goes, I have never heard of anyone being chastised for not liking the band. I know plenty of people who abhorred them and tell the guys on a regular. I happen to be very old and close friends with them and I think Gainesville is a much better place due to their inhabitance.

i'm not saying gainesville is worse off. i just... cannot stand the sound of these bands. to me, they are the worst. and yet i like against me! makes no sense. when i lived in texas, before i was aware of what florida had to offer music-wise, i hated less than jake as well. it's only a coincidence that i ended up here. hot water... they are good for gainesville, but not good for my ears. i think one of them took my boyfriend's guitar on tour many years ago. it's a good guitar... just too bad it played such not good music. i'm sure they are very nice guys, however i am glad they broke up.

I completely understand your point of view but I assure you, having worked sound for many local bands, there is far worse out there. Most bands that play at The Backstage Lounge and 1982 make a walrus with a tuba sound like angels.
