hi everyone. im lawrence(or adam if you prefer) and i've been undergoing a particularly frustrating recording project for quite some time now. in case you were wondering, which you wernt but its almost 7 am and i am about to enter the throes of an ambien haze, we are using an otari mx 5050 8 track and have the usual assortment of odds and ends microphones(at 4033s, various shures from the 57 up til the ksm something or another).
anyways i just came into some money and i had the bright idea to blow it on a really expensive microphone, something high endish and resellable to finish off the record(and by finish off i mean, oh, the last 70 percent). ive been looking at ribbon microphones and choosing one leaves me dizzy so my question is. what should i buy? im thinking about something in the 1000-1400 dollar range, something primarly for lead vocals but will also be used for some strings, and whatever else it sounds good with. im thinking ribbon for the warmness factor but im not married to the idea. also, im considering both new and old vintage mics so any idea of either would be appreciated.
ok thanks a lot. email me at fizzfit2k@aol.com or scoli6dm@hotmail.com with any advice and ill be sure to thank you and then say something totally nonsensical. also my im is fizzfit2k. thanks!

2check page 2 of Tech Room, there is a brief thread devoted to used ribbon mic's. I would've posted the link, but I'm out the door.

3Although I've said this in about all 60 of my posts, the Coles 4038 is by far the best mic in its class. it goes for about 1000, and completely out-does every mic in that price range. It's great for vocals, overheads, strings, acoustics, etc....actually i haven't found anything I don't like it on.
Buy two.
I'm sure everyone will agree to at least saying this mic is one of the best.

4I'm with Chris on this one. Coles, no question. You'll need some gain though.
