O jesus above! the things with the Pink Floyd Sound, she is-a getting strained with the ambition of her proforcers, no?

In order to abide with the rules:

CRAP

Can't ignore 'Live At Pompeii' though, the masterpiece; pomposity, pretension, 70s hippie bullshit rockumentary live film really special. One of my favourite music videos. Especially the back-projection bits.

But when it really comes down to it:

CRAP

historically inaccurate.

i beg to differ on your assessment of "obscured by clouds". quite good, amd most floyd fans consider it one of thier best. much better than atom, umma, more, and equally as good as meddle or wish.

what some folks are missing is the historical influence of the band.

like them or not, they sure cast a huge shadow over psych/prog/kraut, experimental rock like s youth and gastr, all the way to radiohead mogwai godspead and crap like phish.

I've tried to hate them but can never bring myself to. At its worst, its bloated as hell but even self indulgent toss like The Wall had a couple of good tunes - and I'm a sucker for that guitar sound.

I tend to rate Obscured by Clouds - maybe its because they had to knock it out in three weeks, rather than spend six months strangling the life out of it....

Like most not crap bands PF were considerably better than the efforts of any one member, thus all the post Animals albums = crap. Split the lineup and it goes to hell. Rick Wright had been sacked during The Wall, wasn't on the Final Cut and was only a session musician on Momentary Lapse. After that it was just a racing driver's hobby band anyway.

On balance: Not Crap

there is a lot of fault that can be found in floyd. it's really pompous wanky shit, from spoiled (except gilmour apparently) brits who like to play blues. and i never liked the barrett stuff so much. but...

i have to go "not crap" on this for a few reasons.

the album "animals" is pretty damn great.

they represent a lot of things i value:

some creative and musical uses of the recording studio as instrument
a visual hook based more on vivid imagery than on a charismatic frontman/frontwoman
artsy, epic, self-indulgent concept albums not about love, sex and breakups, etc.

they influenced me when i was younger and while i don't listen to them as much anymore, i'm glad i did listen to them back then.

only after Syd fucked off. All the Syd stuff I cant stand!! So childish , stupid, and just plain lame!

All floyd till waters departure after this is THE stuff!

I was waiting for someone to say that! The day Syd left the Floyd is the day the band started to get better (amazing how that happens when a real guitar player joins the lineup). David Gilmour is one of my all time favorite guitarists for reasons too numerous to list here, but I honestly believe he saved Pink Floyd....up until about 1987 when he shat out "A Momentary Lapse Of Talent"
