I guess that's probably true. I never thought that.
Though in this circumstance (a loud rock band) I don't see how the mics could even need any boosting. Aren't they getting source material that's loud enough to begin with? I don't know why the guitar would be the problem instrument in this scenario.

Yeah, definately with louder sources you don't have to crank those pres as much, for quieter instrumentation though, cheaper pres with less gain mean that you're fighting noise while trying to gain the signal. Dynamics can often sound a little dull with quieter sources if you're using low-gain pres.
